About Juan Paez

16+ years of outboards, salt water, and doing the job right the first time.

It started with a cooler packed the night before

Ask Juan Paez where this business really started and he won't mention engines. He'll tell you about Saturdays โ€” his parents up before sunrise, the cooler packed the night before, and that moment when the hull finally climbs up on plane and the whole day opens up in front of you. Those trips were the best part of growing up. Somewhere in there he worked out that the boat wasn't just how you got to the water. It was the reason the day was any good at all.

He worked out something else, too: none of it happens if the motor doesn't run.

That's what sent him to Marine Mechanics Institute, and it's why he's spent his entire adult life in Florida. MMI is where the instinct became a trade โ€” where "I think it's the fuel system" turned into knowing how to prove it, with the right tool in his hand and the factory spec in front of him.

From there he took the long way around the industry, and he'd tell you that was the point. He spent time on the manufacturer side, learning how these engines are meant to go together โ€” the tolerances, the procedures, and the reasoning behind procedures most people just follow. He worked marinas, where you find out what fifteen years of salt and sun actually does to a boat. And he worked club and rental fleets, which is an education all its own: hundreds of engines, run hard by hundreds of people who don't own them. If a part can fail, a rental fleet finds out first.

What he kept running into wasn't the work. He loved the work. It was the way the work kept getting run. Quotes that grew quietly once the boat was already in the shop. "Diagnostics" that amounted to swapping parts on the customer's dime until something stuck. Boats sitting for three weeks because nobody wanted to make an awkward phone call. Good techs measured on units moved instead of problems solved.

None of that was hard to fix. It was just a decision nobody was making.

By then Juan had a family of his own, which sharpened it considerably. He knew exactly what a blown weekend costs, because now he was on the other side of it โ€” the guy loading his own kids into a boat on a Saturday morning. So he stopped waiting around for somebody else to run a shop the way he'd want one run for him, and started Juanito's.

The boat isn't the point. The Saturday is the point.

That's the whole thing, and it explains everything else about how we work. It's why you get a firm quote before a wrench turns. Why we'll tell you when something can honestly wait another season. Why we'll drive out to your dock instead of making you go find a trailer. Somebody out there has already told their kids they're going fishing this weekend, and that promise deserves a mechanic who treats it like it matters.

Juan fell in love with boats because of what they made possible for his family. Sixteen years and three factory certifications later, the job is making sure they keep doing exactly that for yours.
